Hannah Abbott Queen of the Cauldron BASICS Name: Hannah Maria Abbott Meaning: Hannah:From the Hebrew name חַנָּה (Channah) which meant "favour" or "grace". Hannah was the mother of the prophet Samuel in the Old Testament. As an English name, Hannah was not regularly used until after the Protestant Reformation. The Greek and Latin version Anna is used in the New Testament and was traditionally more widely used as a Christian name. Maria: The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved" or mr "love". Abbott: From Middle English abbott ‘abbot’ (Old English abbod) or Old French abet ‘priest’. Both the Old English and the Old French term are derived from Late Latin abbas ‘priest’ (genitive abbatis), from Greek abbas, from Aramaic aba ‘father’. This was an occupational name for someone employed in the household of or on the lands of an abbot, and perhaps also a nickname for a sanctimonious person thought to resemble an abbot. Nicknames: Hannie, Hannah Banana Birthdate/Age: May 3rd 1980/21 Citizenship/Heritage: English. Originally the Abbott family were residents of the infamous Wizarding town of Godric's Hollow (made famous by Harry Potter) but have since moved to Cumbria, where they currently live just outside the small town of Ambleside, in the Lake District, at the head of Windermere. Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual ![]() STATUS Bloodline: Halfblood Allegiance: Order Social Status: Single Occupation: Chef at The Leaky Cauldron Residence: The Leaky Cauldron ![]() DETAILS Appearance: The first thing people notice about Hannah Abbott is her height; standing at exactly five foot she is much smaller than those around her. She has dirty blonde hair, which she used to wear in pigtails but during her year away from Hogwarts she finally cut her hair short (for her) and now it sits at her shoulders as opposed to down her back, as it used to. She tends to wear her hair down now as well, except for when she is in the kitchen, where it would just get in her way. Hannah's hair is naturally rather straight and she quite likes this, although she occasionally curls it with a charm. Hannah's eyebrows are darker than her hair, a fact which annoys her to no end, and has provoked some people to question whether she is, in fact, a natural blonde. She has brown eyes and rather pale, freckled skin. Hannah has full lips and absolutely perfect teeth (thanks to her father, who always drilled into her the importance of good dental hygiene). When it comes to clothing Hannah is a big fan of colour. She is very rarely caught sticking to simple shades of black and white and her taste in fashion very much echoes her personality. She loves bright colours and fun patterns and, although she generally sticks to comfortable clothing, Hannah loves nothing more than dressing up for a night out. Family: Thomas Abbott: Aged 49, a pureblood and a tester on the committee for experimental charms. As an only child Hannah has always been her daddy's little girl but since the death of her mother their bond has been particularly close. Thomas is very protective of his little girl and has disapproved of nearly all of her boyfriends. He gets suspicious when he hears Hannah talk about men he doesn't know and occasionally feels left out of her life, despite her best attempts to include him. Besides this, Thomas is a good-natured and smart man. He can take a joke well and, despite being a windower, he never has to dine alone as his social skills have ensured that he has a group of friends to rely on. Jane Abbott: Jane Thompson was a Muggleborn Witch who was on the receiving end of plenty taunts and sneers from the pureblood and Slytherin circles, which was why she was so surprised when Thomas Abbott, from a very prominent pureblood family, asked her out. However, she soon discovered that not all purebloods were prejudiced and this balance was something she tried to drill into Hannah from a young age. It worked and Hannah has inherited her sense of justice, her sense of humour and a talent in the kitchen from her mother. Jane was a photographer for the Daily Prophet who was murdered by Death Eaters during Hannah's sixth year at Hogwarts as a result of a series of scathing articles she wrote about the dangers of elivating blood purity. Personality: Hannah has many positive traits including diplomacy, a talent with words, discriminating intellect and propensity for study and skillful creativity. Hannah tends to play her cards close to her chest, only revealing how she is truly feeling to a few close friends. Because of this some may consider her impassionate, however this is very far from the truth. Hannah is definitely not unsympathetic or insensitive. Essentially gentle and thoughtful, consideration to others is a pronounced trait in her personality. Hannah tends to judge people rather quickly going on a 'gut reaction', which is usually spot on. She does, however, keep an open mind, a firm believer that people can change. Hannah prefers things to be simple and ordered and is a very neat person. Hannah has her feet firmly rooted in reality and has frequently been described as practical and a realist. However, she is also a perfectionist and is never happy unless something has been done just the way she likes it. She is unhappy with slack standards and is predisposed to working long and hard herself and she expects the same in others. Hannah cares very little for material possessions. She believes that there are other things which are much more important; friends and family for example. Whilst nowhere near as shy as she was as a child Hannah still rejects public attention and seeks to avoid centre-stage at all costs. Being of a modest nature she is apt to underestimate her own abilities, is too cautious to engage in anything too risky, clings to convention and prefers to operate within established frameworks. A typical Hufflepuff Hannah believes in hard work above all else, however she must be watched carefully to ensure that she doe not overstress by trying to do too much. She is a bit of a pushover and has a hard time saying no, especially to her friends, and can, therefore, easily be taken advantage of. It could be claimed that she has impossibly high romantic ideals and she is definitely not one to sleep around. When Hannah falls for someone she falls fast and she falls hard, however, even when head over heels in love Hannah is always pragmatic and realistic. To say that Hannah has changed completely since the War be a lie but she hasn't stayed the same either. Since Voldemort's defeat, in fact, Hannah has somewhat come into her own. She is less shy than she used to be, something she accredits to her final year at Hogwarts. Along with other members of Dumbledore's Army, she openly rebelled, for the first time in her life, against a regime. This made Hannah feel freer, more powerful and since then she has always spoken her mind; if she doesn't like the way something is going then she will tell you. However, this is never at the expense of others and in that sense, Hannah still remains the sweet, kind-hearted girl that she has always been. Hufflepuff Taurus': Taurus, the nature-loving bull, is a natural sign for Hufflepuffs to be born under. These wizards tend to specialize in herbs and nature spells, also in the husbandry and preservation of magical beasts. Their gentle good natures, open friendliness, hard work, patience, and politeness endear them to most everyone they meet. However, these Hufflepuff Taureans must be careful not to overwork themselves, lest they suffer breakdowns in health. (It has been noticed that Hufflepuffs born under the sign of Taurus swing wildly between overwork and indolence, the lazy periods being used to recharge their energy; they seem to have a problem pacing themselves.) They like their magical workrooms neat and tidy, and prefer peaceful occupations to dangerous or aggressive ones; most Hufflepuffs born under this sign wind up working as hedge witches, village herbalists, and midwives. HP Astrology History: The Abbott family were one of the old pureblood families who had a very comfortable existence. They were neither extremely wealthy nor extremely poor but they never wanted for anything, and it was into this family that Hannah was born one sunny May morning. Her father (Thomas) was a tester on the Committee on Experimental Charms and her mother (Jane) was a freelance photographer for the Daily Prophet. Hannah was an only child and as such she had quite a lonely childhood, with very few people to play with. She tried to play with the local Muggle children but they were disturbed by her occasional uncontrollable outbursts of magic, the first of which happened when she was six years old and somehow managed to summon a Frisbee they had been playing with from the top of a roof and right into her hand. Hannah was not surprised when her Hogwarts letter arrived when she was eleven years old, in fact she was more excited to finally get to the place she'd heard so much about. Her parents would often reminisce about their own school days, telling her all about teachers with unpronounceable names and pranks that had landed their plotters in detention for months. Hannah was absolutely terrified when she first arrived on Platform nine and three quarters, afraid that she wouldn't fit in and wouldn't make any friends. However, luckily for her, she managed to find a space in a compartment with some other first years, including Ernie MacMillan and Justin Finch-Fletchley and by the end of the journey she thought that she could have actually made a few friends. The Sorting Hat was on Hannah's head for less than two seconds before it announced that she would be following in her father's footsteps and spending the next seven years of her life in Hufflepuff house. This announcement was greeted with a cheer from Hufflepuff house and Hannah immediately felt right at home. Hannah settled into her new surroundings surprisingly quickly and soon formed a bond with her housemates, most of whom have remained her closest friends since then. As for her classes - whilst she never really excelled in any of her classes, Hannah did relatively well and her professors could never find anything negative to say about her. She gave one hundred and ten per cent in all of her classes, even flying, which she had always had a phobia of. During Hannah's second year the Chamber of Secrets was opened and Muggleborns were being petrified. This was the first time that Hannah had ever really thought about her bloodline and found that she actually felt guilty for it. She was extremely upset when her friend and housemate, Justin Finch-Fletchley, was petrified and she, like the majority of her house, suspected that Harry Potter was the Heir of Slytherin. Hannah has felt horribly guilty about this since then. It was in Hannah's fourth year when everything began to change. It was this year that Hogwarts hosted the TriWizard tournament. Hannah, as a proud Hufflepuff supported Cedric Diggory (even wearing a 'Potter Stinks' badge). The night of the final task Hannah was sat with a group of Hufflepuffs supporting Cedric. They cheered loudly when they saw Harry and Cedric appear out of nowhere, clutching the TriWizard Cup, assuming that it had been a joint victory. However, it soon became evident that something was wrong. Needing someone to blame for Cedric's death, she trusted what Dumbledore said, believing that You-Know-Who had returned and never doubting it. Of course, it helped that Hannah's family also believed Dumbledore one hundred per cent and even canceled their subscription to the Daily Prophet that summer. The summer before her fifth year, Hannah received a prefects badge along with her annual booklist, something which pleased her immensely. During her fifth year Dolores Umbridge was made High Inquisitor of Hogwarts and Hannah found that she was being repressed. When she was approached by Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley about joining a Defence Against the Dark Arts group, led by Harry Potter, Hannah didn't even have to think about her answer; she said yes immediately and even though they were sold out she has never regretted that decision. Hannah had the unhappy distinction of being the first in her year to crack under the strain of the exams, requiring a Calming Draught from Madam Pomfrey after she broke down crying in Herbology, saying she was too stupid to take her exams. The stress of the OWLs also caused Hannah to accidentally multiply a ferret into a flock of flamingos during her practical Transfiguration exam. The War was truly brought home to Hannah only a month after the beginning of her sixth year when she was taken out of a Herbology class only to be told that her mother had been killed; murdered by Death Eaters. Hannah returned home immediately and spent the rest of that year at home with her father trying to come to terms with her mother's death. During this time she was still in contact with her close friends, Susan, Ernie and Justin and although she missed her friends and Hogwarts, Hannah knew that her father needed her. Hearing about Dumbledore's death Hannah was completely dumbstruck. Dumbledore had always seemed immortal to her and she had never considered the possibility that he could be killed. She persuaded her father to allow her to travel back to Hogwarts for his funeral and Hannah was one of the many who shed tears as they said goodbye to their former Headmaster. After the funeral Hannah had a long talk with her father and they finally decided that she would return to school after the summer to finish her education. That Summer the Abbott family started to read the Daily Prophet once again, just to keep tabs on what they were saying. Hannah always remained a little skeptical of the newspaper, something that was proved founded when she read about Scrimgeour's 'resignation', Thickeness' appointment and the introduction of the MuggleBorn registry. Hannah knew immediately that it could only mean one thing; that the Ministry had been infiltrated by Death Eaters and for the second time in her life, she felt guilty about her bloodline. Hannah's final year was something of a shock. Snape was headmaster, the Carrows were professors and Crucio was an accepted way of dealing with 'troublemakers'. For the first time that she could remember, Hannah was unhappy at Hogwarts. At first she tried to keep her head down and out of the way of the Carrows but soon Hannah found that there were things she just couldn't ignore. When Neville, Ginny and Luna approached her, Ernie and Susan about reforming the DA, the three of them agreed almost immediately, knowing that they had to fight this regime. They all suffered for this but it did not stop them from fighting and in the end, they all retreated to the Room of Requirement to wait. Whilst there, more and more people started to arrive, and soon the room was full of people all of whom seemed to be waiting for one thing - Harry Potter. They all whispered his name reverently, determined that he would turn up and there would be a revolution. Hannah soon found herself swept up in the enthusiasm, also believing that the Boy Who Lived would come and save them all. Yet, she was still surprised when one evening Neville disappeared to the Hog's Head, only to return with Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Before she really knew what was happening, the battle had started and Hannah found herself facing fully-grown Death Eaters, who knew spells she could only dream of. Somehow, though, she found herself coping much better than she could have possibly hoped to. Her father was one of the people who was summoned by Charlie Weasley and Professor Slughorn, and he returned to Hogwarts to fight alongside his daughter. Unfortunately, at some point just before midnight, Hannah was hit by a sectumsempra by the Death Eater she was dueling and was pulled aside by Professor Slughorn, whom did his best to stop the bleeding. Fortunately his best was good enough, and Hannah suffered no lasting damage save for a few faint scars across her stomach. Hannah doesn't really remember much after Harry beat Voldemort, the days following the battle are all a blur of tears, hugs and funerals. Hannah doesn't ever want to go to another funeral in her life, believing that she's been to enough for a lifetime. Once things had settled down Hannah returned to Hogwarts to sit her final exams, which she somehow managed to pass well. After this, she returned home, not quite sure what she wanted to do with her life and spent several months at home, looking after her father until eventually he put his foot down and acquired a menial secretarial job for her with the Ministry. It wasn't much but it gave Hannah a little piece of independence - she was working and earning her own money, even if it wasn't really what she wanted to do with her life. After two years of working with the Ministry Hannah had had enough. She moved out of her father's house and found herself a job as a chef at the Leaky Cauldron, in London. Accommodation was provided with the job but she recently bought her own flat away from work at the newly-opened Libertas Flats. She finds that she is happier now, having a job she loves (she had always loved to cook) and that living right at the hub of the Wizarding World provides her plenty of opportunities to see her old schoolfriends and to keep up-to-date with what is happening. ![]() SCHOOLING School: Hogwarts House/Years: Hufflepuff/91-98 O.W.L.S: 8: Charms (E), Transfiguration (E), Defense Against Dark Arts (E), Potions (A), Herbology (O), Astronomy (E), Care of Magical Creatures (E), Ancient Runes (A).
